Rhona Duffy is a visual artist working mainly in the “Picassiette” (mixed-media) technique. “Picassiette” or “pique assiette” incorporate pieces of broken pottery, bone china, plates, cups, bowls, tiles, shells, and other discarded items in your work. The technique is named after Raymond Isidore, a Frenchman who covered his house and garden in broken crockery. The nickname “Picassiette” was given to him by local townspeople and is a playful term that roughly translates to “plate thief”.
Rhona enjoys a contemporary take on mosaic, while also appreciating the classical rules – she particularly enjoys employing the ancient art technique opus sectile (which uses large, specially cut pieces of colored stone, glass or other materials to create a picture or pattern). Her work is inspired by Art Nouveau, Picassiette, music, and nature. Rhona’s work is an antidote to the challenges facing us in today’s world, which aims to bring peace and joy to both herself, as she creates, and its viewers. She especially loves to create mosaics that bring back memories or help with healing, which are often requested in her commissions from customers and clients.
She has an arts degree in English and philosophy, and a master’s degree in journalism. She is the founding editor of Mosaic & Glass magazine. Rhona taught regularly at the Wider Access to School Project in Denny – a charity providing subsidised higher education to adult learners in the local community – and the Central Scotland School of Craft in Dunblane for several years. She now teaches mainly at Studio 164 Falkirk, which she founded in 2025. As well as teaching there herself, she hosts other mosaic and glass tutors – as well as tutors from various disciplines – regularly too. Rhona’s work is available to buy at Made in Stirling. She also welcomes commissions. In addition, Rhona has been volunteering at her children’s school for over ten years, introducing their classmates and teachers to mosaic and glass.
